"Leiko Ikemura - Mars Mother"
Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Köln, Cologne
01. 07. 2005 - 25. 09. 2005
The extreme poverty of the sacred space in the so-called Kunst-Station Sankt Peter Köln evokes a special synergy between the therein installed and the Arts and the religious context. This very specific Spirituality has inspired Leiko Ikemura. The Japanese artist makes with her sculptures, drawings and paintings a unique convergence of Viewer space and church room. Near the minimalist altar of the Romanesque - Gothic church and the former Altar painting by Peter Paul Rubens, in the soft light-flooded Space, the artist that has lived in Cologne, installed two bronze sculptures called: "The Devil from Cologne" and "The Angel from Cologne".

The gothic windows of the church that were originaly covered in colored glass and lost during the second world war, and thereafter reconstructed in normal glass are covered by Ikemura with translucent colored drawings reprinted on inkjet-prints wich created a mystique athmospere in the old church. On the upper balustrade the artist installed a group of lying terracota-sculptures onthe naked floor.
