Cologne Fine Art Award 2014 to Leiko Ikemura: Leiko Ikemura from Japan, who has been living in Germany since 1985, receives this year’s Cologne Fine Art Prize for her outstanding artistic work in the fields of graphic art, sculpture, and painting.
Not yet 20 years old, Leiko Ikemura left her homeland to study literature and art in Spain – the beginning of an unusual biography, in which two cultures and several languages became intertwined. The masters of Spanish painting and individual artists of classical modernism as well as the tradition of Japanese ink wash painting and calligraphy had a decisive influence on Ikemura’s development as an artist. Her artistic pieces of work start off with sketches, etchings and the artist’s book.
The experienced she gained here with materials and image media having a life of their own still have an influence on Ikemura’s design language: The structure of paper, the texture of canvas, the moulding marks in the ceramic or the patina of bronze are a substantial aspect of the sublime aesthetics of her pieces of art.

Selected paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Leiko Ikemura were displayed in a special exhibition at the Cologne Fine Art.
