This exhibition focuses on drawing as a medium that enables an individual to express their inner emotions, breaking free from the canons of artistic representations.
The fact that drawing is a highly preferred medium among the so-called “outsider” artists indicates how a medium that is as simple as picking up a pen and paper enable individuals to articulate their sensibilities. Drawing is a medium that facilitates intuitive creation.
What motivates creative undertakings? Why are artists compelled to create their works? This exhibition aims to provide the audience with an opportunity to once again consider the fundamental issues of art through creative impulses, departing from the convoluted theoretical discourses often applied to issues on contemporary art. In this survey of drawings, animation will also be included as a genre that released drawings from its static realm.
Also, all the exhibiting artists are of Asian and the Middle Eastern origin. This exhibition was first organized by and held at the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo and then traveled to the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. For traveling the show to Seoul, the Japanese and Korean curators have worked together in collaboration to reconfigure the artists and artworks to address the Korean audience.
